Subject: Trump just declared war on Black Education
John, yesterday, Trump signed an Executive Order to dismantle the Department of Education (DOE) — effectively declaring war on Black children. This is more bullsh*t from him and his band of petty tyrants — but our resistance is stronger.
In a moment, we’ll ask you to chip in to our movement. But first, let’s cover why the DOE matters so much and how we’re going to fight back.
The DOE is a fundamental part of our movement. Since our ancestors were forcefully brought to these shores, Black people have used education as a tool for liberation.
Black folks were beaten, and even killed, for knowing how to read. White supremacists were so terrified at the thought of powerful, educated Black folks that they enacted laws to prohibit us from learning. That’s how powerful educational access is.
When Jim Crow created “separate but equal” schools, our community organized and fought back through the courts.
The DOE exists today because of our struggle — a direct result of Black resistance and the landmark Brown v. Board decision.
This is a targeted attack on Black and Brown people and folks with disabilities who depend on the DOE for grants, access, and support.
This includes:

Title I funding for poor, predominantly Black schools.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR), which investigates racial discrimination in schools.

Support for HBCUs and Pell Grants expanding Black access to higher education.
What Trump did yesterday WILL result in an erosion of civil rights protections—schools could discriminate without consequences, placing the onus on parents and individuals to fight back through costly and time-consuming legal battles—something many families simply cannot afford.
And it’s exactly what Trump has set out to do since day one of his presidency.
This moment demands more than petitions and phone calls. It requires strengthening our communities, creating alternative educational support systems, and building our collective power.

We've seen this before—from Trump and throughout history. Like the Black Panthers before us, when systems fail our people, we build our own.
