Dear friend,
It’s easy to take clean drinking water and sanitation services for granted. But for billions of people, there is no faucet to turn on or no toilet to flush.
Safe water and sanitation services are vital to communities — preventing disease, boosting productivity, protecting local resources, and improving the standard of living.
Yet, 2.2 billion people lack safe drinking water.
Water security is one of our key focus areas at Mercy Corps, and we work across the globe to improve access to water, sanitation, and hygiene — from installing solar pumps to distributing sanitary pads.
Learn more about how we help communities get access to clean water to drink, safe sanitation services, and the resources they need to survive and thrive.
Here are a few examples of Mercy Corps’ work in addressing the lack of water and sanitation in communities around the world:

In February of 2023, multiple earthquakes in Syria destroyed water and sanitation infrastructure in schools, homes, and other important facilities. Mercy Corps teams conducted rehabilitation projects and repaired water systems to help restore access to clean water for impacted communities. |

For four years in a row, South Sudan suffered devastating floods. Flood waters contaminated boreholes and latrines, inundated villages, and destroyed communities, affecting roughly two-thirds of the country. Mercy Corps provided water and sanitation services to families, including training women and young girls to make their own sanitary pads. |

Crops like rice and bananas require a substantial amount of water. For farmers and business communities in Senegal, inadequate water decreases crop yield and raises their expenses. Mercy Corps has been installing solar-powered water systems to provide water to farms and gardens in the country — supporting more crops, more income, and a better livelihood for farmers and their families. |

Together with our teams, the communities we serve, and generous people like you, we’re making a life-changing impact for families across the globe.
Sincerely,
The Mercy Corps team
