Imagine waking up to find out a billionaire set up a toxic power plant in your backyard without permission. No warning. No public hearings.

That’s exactly what Elon Musk’s AI company just did in Memphis, Tennessee. When the city’s grid couldn’t provide enough energy to power xAI’s new data center, Musk’s company took the quickest, dirtiest shortcut by bringing in mobile gas turbines — the kind typically used as a last resort in disaster zones. These environmentally unfriendly turbines are highly inefficient and spew out toxic pollutants like formaldehyde and nitrous oxide.

xAI even set them up without bothering to get a permit or authorization from a public agency. And when they got caught? They didn’t shut them down. Instead, they asked for approval after the fact — and now they want to add 11 more.

The worst part is that the company is expanding to another Memphis neighborhood already burdened by pollution — from an oil refinery that generates particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide, to a sterilization plant linked to elevated cancer risk and a former military waste disposal site.

Musk is betting that no one will stop him. Because this is what he does. He infiltrates our government and bends the rules in his favor. He builds his empire on public subsidies, then turns around and bulldozes communities for profit — without accountability or consequences.

This is why we have to resist. Donald Trump has made it clear that Elon Musk has free reign to enrich himself in any way he wants — and we’re seeing the consequences from Washington to Memphis.

We can’t wait for Washington to save us. We must take action right now by fighting to elect leaders at the state and local level who will take on billionaires like Musk and stop them from poisoning our air and our water.
