This Congress, I reintroduced the 287(g) Protection Act to solidify the role of local law enforcement in supporting federal immigration efforts—ensuring that state and local agencies can step in when the federal government fails to act. Under the Biden Administration, states—including Texas—were blocked by federal courts while attempting to protect their residents from the border chaos Biden caused. On his first day back in office, President Trump signed an Executive Order directing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to expand partnerships with state and local law enforcement agencies under the 287(g) program.
Last week, the National Police Association also endorsed the 287(g) Protection Act. NPA Legislative Director Paula Fitzsimmons highlighted its importance, stating, “Americans overwhelmingly support the removal of dangerous illegal migrants from our streets. It is an effort that requires collaboration between federal and local law enforcement agencies. The 287(g) Program Protection Act would facilitate this endeavor by making improvements to this vital program and expanding its use.”
With the backing of the NPA, President Trump’s Administration, and local Sheriff’s in South Texas, the 287(g) Protection Act should be a top priority for the Republican-led Congress to pass and send to the President’s desk.
