The Senate is expected to vote this week on Aaron Reitz, Trump’s nominee
to lead the DOJ’s Office of Legal Policy – and we need to sound the alarm.
This role shapes how the Justice Department interprets the law and helps
to select federal judges. Confirming someone who won’t even say that
administration officials must follow federal court orders is a direct
threat to our democracy.

Reitz’s refusal to commit to the rule of law comes as Trump is already
ignoring court rulings. If Trump surrounds himself with DOJ officials like
Reitz – who will justify or enable his defiance of court orders – then our
system of checks and balances will be tested in ways our nation has not
yet experienced. This is about more than one nomination. It’s about
whether we live in democracy or are all subject to a would-be king.

We don’t have time to wait. This vote could happen any day, and if Reitz
is confirmed, Trump will have one more ally in his push to dismantle
critical constitutional protections for the American people from the

The Justice Department exists to uphold the law. But Trump’s nominee to
lead the DOJ’s Office of Legal Policy, Aaron Reitz, refused to say that a
public official – including the president – must follow court orders.

That’s not a small thing. That’s a crisis.

This office advises the attorney general on key matters of law and policy
– meaning Reitz would have direct influence over how Trump’s DOJ
interprets the law. And if Trump’s DOJ won’t enforce court rulings, what’s
left to stop him?

This weekend, the Trump administration defied a federal judge's order by
proceeding with the deportation of Venezuelans to El Salvador, despite a
court mandate to halt such actions. This blatant disregard for judicial
authority underscores the administration's willingness to operate outside
the law, setting a dangerous precedent that threatens the foundational
checks and balances of our democracy. When those in power choose to ignore
court orders they disagree with, we’ve handed over our freedom to a
tyrant.

And now Trump wants Reitz – a longtime aide to Senator Ted Cruz and
ideological extremist – to help shape the legal foundation of his second
term.

If Trump is building a DOJ that won’t check his power, that means:

* No accountability when his administration breaks the law
* A pipeline of extremist judges who will protect Trump, not the
Constitution
* A Justice Department that works for Trump, not the American people

The Senate will soon vote on whether to confirm Reitz. We need to act
