John, people like you and me aren't scared of Trump and Elon – so why is national Democratic leadership?
I'm Kat Abughazaleh, and these two guys can't STAND me! That's why I'm running for Congress in Illinois' 9th Congressional District.
At my day job for Media Matters, I used to watch and call out primetime Fox News to ensure Democrats knew exactly how to fight back. In my free time, I started creating video explainers about this Fox News misinformation, and I found that folks responded better to humor and authenticity than they did to the same old strategies.
Then, Elon Musk sued our organization, and I lost my job.
But I didn't give up the fight: I mastered the art of triggering powerful conservative figures while also deradicalizing average social media users. This would be funny if it weren't so serious, and I believe it's important to actually call out the bullshit that's untrue and harming our lives.
Elon STILL had a problem with me (I think I hurt his feelings), and he deposed me for hours on end. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Elon Musk is currently doing the exact same thing, but to our entire government and country.
Every elected official should be putting everything on the line to stop Trump and Elon, but many aren’t because they’re afraid. They're sticking to the same strategies which are simply not meeting the moment. Why the hell is our leadership doing nothing?
That's why I'm running for Congress. When elected, I'll be the youngest woman and second Palestinian-American in Congress. But more importantly, I’m equipped to stand up for the Americans who are justifiably freaking out over the fascist takeover of our government.
Let's try something better. Democrats need to fight fascism at every opportunity. We need to offer folks an alternative vision, and we can't compromise on our beliefs and move to the right.
And that's why I'm running a different type of campaign – this is NOT a fundraising email. I'm reaching out because I just want you to know that there are Democrats who are passionate and energetic fighters and who aren’t scared of Elon Musk.
Campaigns usually buy data in bulk, send out as many emails as possible to grassroots supporters like you, and take your support for granted. But I want to do something different — something BETTER.
That’s why while I might eventually ask concerned citizens like you for campaign contributions, I want your first impression of me to be just about me, not about money.
