Friend, the Trump administration is moving forward with its insidious plan to force undocumented immigrants to either register with the U.S. government — or face criminal charges, and detention and deportation. It is clear how the Trump administration plans to use this information: They want to find, arrest, and deport as many immigrants as possible, or frighten them into choosing to leave their lives behind. This rule blanket targets and attempts to criminalize millions of hardworking, longstanding members of our communities.
Here’s where things stand: The administration has published the new rule, effective April 11, and there is now an open public comment period.
Friend, we need as many people to speak out before April 11 as possible. Sign on to NILC’s public comment today >>>

We have seen forced registries in the U.S. before. They have preceded some of the most shameful episodes in U.S. history, including the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and the targeting of immigrants from Muslim majority countries in the wake of 9/11. We cannot allow history to repeat itself.
Important note for undocumented community members: Coming forward to register will be extremely dangerous for most undocumented immigrants. It could lead to detention, deportation, and possibly criminal prosecution. Community members with questions about registration and how it might impact them should consult trusted immigration lawyers, inform themselves about their rights, and monitor trusted sources of information. Read our Know Your Rights resource for more information.
Friend, thank you for speaking out. Our collective action can send a powerful message: we will not allow the government to criminalize our families and neighbors, and we will not let fear, hatred, or discrimination dictate our futures.
Together,
Heidi Altman
