Hey, John!
No, down here! ⬇️
Here in the cool water.
Hiya, I’m a trout smolt — I know I’m small and hard to spot when I’m swimming around.
I hear that you and Save the Redwoods League are working really hard to save my home. One day, I’ll be big and strong enough to head out to the open ocean. Until then, the clear, cool streams below Monte Rio Redwoods are perfect for young salmonids that means steelhead trout like me, and my coho salmon buddies!
Will you help my friends at the League conserve Monte Rio Redwoods and make sure these streams and waterways are always protected? If you give now, your donation will be tripled-matched!

The Monte Rio Redwoods property includes three streams that all feed into the Russian River. These headwaters — an important 3.7 miles of streams! — mean everything to my species. This is where we come to spawn, and these streams are the ideal habitat for us to grow up.

The League has worked for a long time to protect our habitats. Did you hear how they were able to restore streams that salmon rely on in Prairie Creek? They also removed harmful dams along the Klamath River, restoring habitats for the threatened chinook salmon.
Along the streams of Monte Rio Redwoods, bushes and fallen tree branches create pools and shade where I like to rest from the strong currents. The uptick in nutrients nourishes vegetation, which stabilizes banks, keeps creeks cool and attracts birds and deer. Everything is connected here!
Getting how important these downstream effects are for our entire ecosystem? Protecting us means clean streams and healthy forests.
Thanks for sticking up for a little trout smolt like me.
💙,
