Dear Supporter,
Acting Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Leland Dudek has announced plans for radical downsizing (at an agency where staffing already is at a 50-year low and demand for service is at an all-time high with 10,000 Americans reaching age 65 every day). These cuts include firings, coerced early retirement and the closure of SSA field offices that service the public.
Seniors’ advocates, including the National Committee, warn that these decisions could jeopardize the agency’s ability to serve its beneficiaries effectively, particularly those who rely on in-person assistance. Adding to these difficulties, many of Dudek’s decisions appear to be heavily influenced by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by billionaire Elon Musk. According to the Washington Post, Dudek admitted to advocacy groups that Musk and his team are “calling the shots” at SSA.

With an overhead of less than 1 percent, SSA is one of the most efficient federal agencies. Yet, SSA has been woefully underfunded since 2011, and Social Security beneficiaries have been paying the price in the form of reduced service and long wait times.
