The Trump/Musk administration is moving quickly to dismantle vital federal programs in order to pay for tax cuts for their billionaire buddies. From the elimination of environmental justice efforts to renewed attacks on reproductive rights, the federal cuts have hurt our nation’s most vulnerable communities — and here in the West, we’ve seen entire firefighting programs dismantled in the name of “ending DEI”.

As President Trump and Elon Musk wage an all-out assault on key federal workers and programs, it’s important to take stock of who is hurt by these cuts. Across the nation, federal programs that support our most vulnerable populations have been targeted for elimination by the new administration — from grants supporting lead pipe removal to cuts to housing for veterans. The Trump/Musk administration seems determined to cut any federal support that doesn’t immediately benefit wealthy white men, and we’re already seeing severe consequences. In the name of “ending DEI”, Western states including New Mexico have seen firefighting bootcamps for women eliminated — making our state less prepared for wildfire season in just a few months.
