Dear Friend,

Between the mass protests, anger at systemic injustice, and the public health and economic crises stemming from COVID-19, protecting Americans’ right to vote safely has taken on new urgency. What happens when the pandemic shuts down polls or forces people to wait for hours to cast their ballots? How do we ensure all Americans can have a voice on election day?

This Thursday, Ann Ravel, Digital Deception Project Director at MapLight and former FEC commissioner will join VISION, Knight Foundation’s weekly show about the trends, ideas and disruptions changing the face of our democracy for an in-depth conversation on ensuring the national voting process is fair, inclusive and representative. Please join us for this live conversation on Thursday, June 4th at 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. Eastern). The program will run for 30 minutes. Click here to register.

MapLight's work protecting the right to vote is part of our central focus on combating online political deception to protect our democracy. Our op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle outlines the need to protect democracy during the current “infodemic.” We’re also calling for greater scrutiny of Facebook’s political ad policies and supporting legislation in Congress to limit microtargeting of political ads online, which create a divisive information environment and target marginalized communities with messages intended to discourage political participation.

These are trying times, but they also serve to reinforce our resolve and commitment to defending our democracy. Thank you for your support.

Best,
Dan
