John, excuse the poor quality, but there's a reason I'm pulling out the photo albums today: it's my dad's birthday!

A lot of folks didn't think I would amount to much when I was growing up, but if there was one person who really believed in me, it was him.

His work as a criminal defense and civil rights attorney has had a huge impact on how I, as an organizer and elected official, see the world we live in. It's why I'm so passionate about improving our criminal justice system and standing up for our working families.

And now, while he isn't here to see the Trump administration's constant and unconstitutional attacks on our rights, I know he'd be proud of the work I'm doing in the State Senate to protect Illinois residents from their far-right agenda.

Looking forward, I'm going to put in the work to continue making my dad proud, John.

I head back to Springfield next week, and my colleagues and I are planning to make big moves to lower healthcare costs, protect workers' rights, and maintain Illinois' status as a role model for communities across the country.

But whether we're here or in Springfield, my team and I know that the key to organizing against MAGA extremism is an established grassroots coalition. We're reaching out to friends and neighbors to ask: will you join our people-powered movement with a donation of any amount you can spare?

Thank you,
Robert Peters
