Next month the government faces two looming fiscal crises. Here is why tackling them now is so important.

John,

While Washington jumps from one controversy to the next, a real crisis is quietly taking shape. If Congress does not act soon, America will be hit hard next month when two major (and related) fiscal deadlines collide.

First, the federal government is operating under a temporary funding measure that expires on March 14. Without a new budget or an extension, the country will face a government shutdown with serious consequences, from delayed pay for service members to disrupted air safety investigations at the National Transportation Safety Board.

At the same time, the Treasury will reach a critical threshold in managing the debt ceiling. Since hitting the limit on January 1, the government has relied on emergency measures to keep paying its bills. But on March 14 – the same day the current funding agreement ends – those measures will tighten, forcing the Treasury to halt contributions to certain federal retirement funds and take other accounting maneuvers to delay default. The actual “X Date” – when the U.S. would run out of options and be unable to pay bondholders – will come sometime after that, but once we hit March 14, the window to act will start closing fast.

Both parties know this is coming, but there is still no plan. Some Democrats see the shutdown threat as leverage to block sweeping changes the Trump administration is making to federal agencies. Meanwhile, while Republicans can move a lot of Trump’s priorities through reconciliation – which only requires a simple majority in the Senate –funding the government is different. To avoid a shutdown, they need 60 votes, which means working with Democrats.

And yet, instead of working together to solve the problem, both sides are waiting, bickering, and hoping the other blinks first.

This is exactly the kind of self-inflicted crisis No Labels and our allies in Congress are working to prevent. The only way forward is leadership that puts governing over grandstanding – leaders who will work across the aisle to deliver solutions, even when their own party does not like it. One of those leaders is Rep. Jared Golden, who has made clear he will call out either side when they put politics over progress.

Tomorrow, Rep. Golden will be joining No Labels for a conversation with our community. Join us at 3:15 PM ET for this important discussion.

This crisis is serious, but it is still avoidable – if we demand action now.
