Dear friend,
Next week will mark three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. One of the largest and deadliest conflicts in Europe since World War Two—killing more than 10,000 civilians and internally displacing nearly 4 million people. Another 6.8 million became refugees, seeking shelter and safety in Romania, Poland, and beyond.
Mercy Corps teams have been supporting Ukrainian families since the war started in 2022.
Below is an update on our response and how we’re helping communities affected by the violence recover.
Emergency Response
As the crisis forced many families to flee their homes and livelihoods, Mercy Corps delivered more than $62.2 million dollars in cash assistance; distributed food, clothing, hygiene and medical kits; and offered temporary housing and mental health support to 785,000 people impacted by the war.
Recovering from Damage
Constant bombardment from Russia over the following months destroyed many homes, schools, key infrastructure, and entire communities. It also wrecked farming equipment and factories, leaving many farmers without a way to earn a living. Families struggled to stay warm while young children faced difficulties learning in school.
Mercy Corps has provided material or completed house repairs benefiting over 300 households. We also provided cash assistance to help farmers and entrepreneurs purchase new equipment and rebuild their businesses to provide for their families.
Building Back Stronger
Despite the violence and suffering these past few years, the people of Ukraine have remained resilient. A number of families were able to return to their hometowns and start over or rebuild their lives in new places.
For example, on the eastern side of Ukraine, Mercy Corps has helped Volodymir kickstart his small furniture repair business in a new town. As a husband and father of two young children, the support he received from Mercy Corps has helped him acquire raw materials, build relationships with clients and suppliers, pay his employees, and provide for his family.
Overall, Mercy Corps teams have reached over 7.5 million people impacted by the war in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
Our work in Ukraine is only possible with the support of our teams, the communities we serve, and generous people like you. Read more about our impact in supporting Ukrainian families affected by three years of war.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our mission. We are grateful to have you as part of our Mercy Corps community as we meet the needs of families in Ukraine and 40+ around the world.
Sincerely,
The Mercy Corps Team
