Team — The Trump administration has been signaling for weeks now that they are prepared to do the unthinkable: illegally abolish the Department of Education through executive order.
And they are serious. Just this week, Elon Musk canceled $900 million worth of contracts given through the DOE's research arm, which is a key source of data on the quality and performance of the nation’s schools.
Make no mistake, the DOE’s elementary and secondary programs serve more than 50 million students in over 100,000 schools across America. It also provides assistance to more than 12 million college and trade school students.
Trump and Musk’s attack on the DOE is a direct attack on public education in America, and the millions who rely on its programs.
This unconstitutional power grab would steal resources from our most vulnerable students, raise class sizes, make college more expensive, cut special education, take away crucial civil rights protections, and much more.
We can’t sit idly by while billionaires like Elon Musk dismantle public education in this country while they line their pockets. We must put pressure on Congress and the courts to put a check on this runaway abuse of power.
