Ward 3 Update: An Important Note on Voting & Curfew
Dear Neighbors,
I hope you have been safe and well. Circumstances in the District are shifting rapidly, and I wanted to share a quick note on your voting rights and access to the polls under this evening's curfew.
The District's curfew goes into effect at 7:00 pm tonight while voting centers will remain open until 8:00 pm. Voting is an essential function and traveling to and from voting centers is permitted during the curfew. Many have expressed concern of police encounters during this period. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) committed to me that they will not interfere with citizens exercising their right to vote, but, in the event that an encounter occurs, please report it to the Office of Police Complaints (OPC) (24-hour/toll-free hotline: 866-588-0569) and also alert my office of the incident. I have been on the phone with the Mayor and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and have been told that there is no flexibility in modifying tonight's curfew to come into alignment with voting hours.
I have also spoken with Second District Commander Bedlion on instances where neighbors had attempted to report active vandalism on local businesses and experienced a delayed MPD response. He informed me that MPD is taking an 'all hands on deck' approach and will be prioritizing, protecting, and monitoring commercial business corridors throughout the District.
Regards,
Mary
