Oil money is polluting our politics, friend.

Our 2024 California Environmental Scorecard revealed that just over half of state legislators in California accept money from the oil industry (51%). During the last legislative session, the oil and gas industry spent a record $65.8 million on lobbying in California.

We know why Big Oil is trying harder than ever to buy influence with politicians: Californians are pushing for bold climate progress, and they want to hold us back. But our movement for change is stronger, and together we can make a positive impact.

In 2024, every single Republican had oil money in their pocket—but Republicans weren't the only ones. 37% of Democrats in the California legislature accepted oil money too, taking the side of the industry that's actively putting their communities at risk. (Find out here if your legislator is one of them.)

There's also some good news to share: the percentage of legislators who took oil money in 2024 decreased to 51%—down from 65% in 2021, the first year we started tracking it.

This is a big deal—data shows that Democrats that refuse oil money score more than 20% higher on their environmental actions. When we hold our legislators accountable, it has a concrete outcome in California's climate progress.
