Today marks the anniversary of a historic moment for California and the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ equality: 21 years ago, then-Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom defied state and federal law to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This act of defiance paved the way for achieving marriage equality nationwide.
At the same time in San Diego, Scott also became one of the earliest champions of LGBTQ+ rights in his role as a City Council member.
Since the beginning of his career in public service, Scott has been a fierce advocate for equality. As the Vice Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, Scott remains dedicated to this fight today.
But, with Trump issuing executive orders directly attacking transgender Americans, and an ultra-conservative Supreme Court set on unraveling critical protections – it’s never been more important to stand up for our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors. Add your name to join Scott in sending a clear message that we won’t let them destroy our progress.
We must continue to fight for every American’s right to love who they love, marry who they choose, and identify and express themselves authentically.
That’s why today, we’re reaffirming our commitment to LGBTQ+ rights. We will not stop until every American has equal protection under the law.
