Insider’s Report: What’s Elon Musk and President Trump’s endgame at SSA?

In the short period of time that President Trump, Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have had their hooks in the Social Security Administration (SSA), there have been alarming changes at the agency.

The most obvious — and most egregious — is Musk and DOGE’s access to the sensitive personal data of some 70 million Social Security beneficiaries, creating the potential for enormous abuse. This was the first line of attack in Musk’s bogus campaign to expose fraud at an agency ( [link removed] ) where improper payments are less than 1% of total benefits paid, and most of which result from understaffing at SSA, not beneficiary fraud.

Now SSA is moving to slash 7,000 jobs — 12% of the workforce. The idea of cutting thousands of jobs at a time when staffing at SSA is already at a 50-year low and demand for service is at an all-time high with 10,000 Americans reaching age 65 every day is outrageous and irresponsible.

And it could devastate customer service to millions of Americans on Social Security. The SSA has been woefully underfunded since 2011, and Social Security beneficiaries have been paying the price in the form of reduced service and long wait times. These are backdoor benefit cuts that will impact millions of seniors!

Please tell your members of Congress to PROTECT SOCIAL SECURITY NOW! ( [link removed] )

As we’ve seen recently, nothing is off the table for those determined to cut earned benefits and the services that growing numbers of Americans are counting on in their retirement.

According to SSA’s former Administrator, Martin O’Malley, “Everything they’re doing is driving this agency to system collapse. It will lead to interruptions in service, and that will ultimately cascade into more frequent system interruptions for the processing of claims, ultimately leading to system collapse and eventually the interruption of benefits.”

What Musk and DOGE are trying to do is discredit our most popular social insurance program that has been doing its job quite well for almost 90 years. Musk’s breach of SSA’s database and outrageous claims of mass fraud at the agency were Step #1 in his campaign to dismantle Social Security. It appears that Step #2 is to hollow out the agency staff and shutter field offices, leaving senior Americans without access to valuable customer service.

This is part of a systematic effort to make Social Security harder to access and, in the process, shrink the program as a whole. “By closing field offices, coercing experienced employees into early retirement and cutting over 7,000 jobs, the administration is methodically stripping the SSA of its ability to serve Americans efficiently,” says National Committee President Max Richtman.

What comes next, a cut to the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) … means testing Social Security … privatizing the program for the benefit of Wall Street? One thing is clear: Musk is coming for seniors’ earned benefits. “The waste and fraud in entitlement spending — most of the federal spending is entitlements — that’s the big one to eliminate,” Musk said during a recent interview. “That’s sort of half trillion, maybe $600-700 billion a year.”

Listen to the Latest “You Earned This” Podcast

Check out the National Committee’s latest “You Earned This” podcast episode: “Senator Harkin Pulls No Punches.” ( [link removed] ) Tom Harkin is very concerned about the future of Social Security. In this episode, the former U.S. Senator and one-time presidential candidate says seniors and their advocates must go on OFFENSE to protect the program from President Trump and Elon Musk. Otherwise, he says, they will “terminate Social Security as we know it.” The Senator also sees nefarious motives behind Musk’s getting access to Americans’ sensitive personal data. “He wants the data on you and your kids and families so he can control you in the future,” Harkin warns.

This week’s question is:
I am 50 years old and the 27 years I have been working have been a combination of full-time and part-time employment, with several years of no employment so that I could stay home with my baby. I am back to work full-time now but want to know how all of this will affect my Social Security benefit when I am retired?

Social Security Benefits Warning Issued Over Missed Payments ( [link removed] )

Trump, Musk, and DOGE are pillaging the Social Security Administration for supposed ‘cost-savings.’ SSA is one of the most efficient federal agencies. With an overhead of less than 1 percent, and chronically underfunded by Congress, it is hardly a worthy target unless the point is to undermine Social Security itself,” said Max Richtman, President & CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Social Security to increase overpayment withholdings to 100% from 10% ( [link removed] )

The Social Security Administration said it is going to increase the amount it would claw back from Social Security recipients who received overpayments of their benefits. “This action, ostensibly taken to cut costs at SSA, needlessly punishes beneficiaries who receive overpayment notices,” the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare told MarketWatch. After Maine’s governor publicly challenged him, Trump threw the state’s Social Security into chaos ( [link removed] )

To Social Security advocates, the intent was clear. The move, said Max Richtman, President of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, “defies common sense and implies nefarious motives.... Why on earth would the administration want to make it harder for parents to register their children for Social Security unless the aim was to shrink the size of the program?” (March 7, 2025, Los Angeles Times, Michael Hiltzik)

Social Security Administration Corrects Missing Centenarian Death Dates ( [link removed] )

Map Shows States With Most Social Security Office Closures After DOGE Cuts ( [link removed] )

The recent closures of SSA offices due to DOGE's budget cuts may leave many beneficiaries, particularly the elderly and disabled, with limited access to essential services.
