In the past two weeks, the House Freedom Caucus made moves once thought unimaginable for a group of far-right rebels. The same faction that used to hold out against spending bills and debt ceiling increases has now unanimously supported a $4 trillion debt limit increase and a government funding bill that largely continues President Biden’s agenda.
How did this shift happen? Donald Trump.
Once a group focused on fiscal conservatism, the Freedom Caucus has become Trump’s biggest ally, fiercely loyal to his policies. They are now fully aligned with Trump’s agenda, even supporting spending measures they once vehemently opposed.
This transformation is dangerous.
Trump has transformed the GOP, from fiscal conservatives to culture warriors, with the Freedom Caucus now working as his most dedicated supporters. These extremists are determined to push Trump’s agenda, even if it means abandoning the very principles they once fought for. They’ve become a tool of Trump’s power, aligning with him at every turn, and undermining efforts to hold them accountable.
But we can’t let them continue to dominate our politics.
The Freedom Caucus and Trump are playing dangerous games with our government, undermining the progress we've made and threatening the future of our democracy. We must defeat them before they push us even further toward an authoritarian future.
