Hello from St. Paul,
As you are likely aware, Minnesota faces a $6 billion budget deficit for the next budget cycle. This is happening because a Democrat-led legislature wasted an $18 billion budget surplus, raised taxes by $10 billion, and grew government spending by nearly 40% last session.
With that mammoth, record surplus from last year, many of us expected permanent and significant tax relief, but when the Democrats were through with their reckless spending, you were lucky if you saw a $260 rebate check.
Most of that $18 billion surplus should have been returned to the taxpayers. I had a bill to return your money to you but it never got a hearing. So here we all are left to face the music of DFL out of control spending.
That’s why I’m supporting a bill this session that would let voters decide how surplus funds should be utilized.
The plan would ask voters whether to amend the Constitution to guarantee future budget surpluses are returned to the taxpayers. If approved, a Minnesota tax relief account would be established. Any projected revenues that go over 5% of projected expenditures according to the last biennial budget forecast will be used to fund the account and those revenues would be returned to the taxpayers via refunds.
The funds deposited in the account will not be taxable under Minnesota law, nor can they be used to offset the cost to the state general fund for any tax reductions made by the Legislature. Only income and property taxpayers in Minnesota would be eligible for a refund.
You’ve seen what one-party rule can do to a surplus and our economy. This bill would let Minnesotans decide whether a surplus should automatically be returned to the taxpayers, or to continue letting lawmakers decide how much of it they should spend.
*MINNESOTA TAX DOLLARS FOR MINNESOTANS*
Among all of the reckless spending decisions made by the Democrat trifecta last session, some of the most controversial centered on providing taxpayer-funded assistance to illegal immigrants.
Governor Walz and Democrat leadership led the charge to provide free health care and free college tuition to people who are in this country illegally.
New House legislation would eliminate this spending. It would prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving state-funded financial aid, grants, subsidies, or other taxpayer-funded assistance. It would also ban sanctuary cities, strengthen immigration enforcement, and ensure that criminals who are here unlawfully are held accountable.
Last week’s budget deficit announcement made it clear that we have to cut spending from Minnesota’s budget. Stopping hundreds of millions of dollars from being spent on “free” college and health care for illegal immigrants is a good place to start.
