NORTHVILLIANS,
Today, I will talk about local volunteers in our community who share their unique time and talents for the betterment of our city and surrounding area. We as Northvillians celebrated their accomplishments last week at the Northville Chamber Community Awards annual event which was held February 6th, including dinner at Genitti’s and presentations at the Marquis Theatre.
Background & History on the Chamber's Award Banquet:
Since 1976, the Northville Chamber of Commerce has celebrated the dedication and commitment of community members who give their time and energy to make Northville a special place to live, work and play. Historically, one citizen is recognized with the “Citizen of the Year” award. In recent years, additional awards have been given to those who volunteer their time to various organizations in the community.
In 2014, this honor was designated the “John Genitti Citizen of the Year Award”, in memory of local resident and businessman John Genitti, who was a past recipient. Previously, it was named after our first Mayor of the City, Claude Ely.

City of Northville Volunteer of the Year Award – Kathy Spillane
- Kathy Spillane has shared her time and talents as a leader on city Task Forces, utilizing her experience and expertise, and providing valued insight through her leadership on mobility, sustainability, river restoration, the Farmers’ Market and the Riverwalk.
- Ms. Spillane, as chair of the Sustainability Team, developed Northville’s first Sustainability Plan, Sustainability Scorecard, authored the team’s walkability study, paved the way for a green ordinance audit and assisted in grant writing to support the city, the Historical Society and the River Restoration Task Force.
Northville Township Volunteer of the Year Award – Tom Hughes
- Tom Hughes, a longtime Township native and NHS grad, has made a career out of serving others, joining the Fire Department in 2004 and progressing to Deputy Fire Chief. During his tenure, he created the Department’s fire prevention division, introducing such innovative community initiatives as the Kindergarten Fire and Life Safety Program, which he has expanded to fourth graders and the Northville High School CPR program.
- Additionally, he is president of the Firefighters Charity Fund, which he founded in 2014. The Charity Fund began with the annual Tom Hughes Memorial Golf Classic in 2022 to honor his late father, a local business owner who also gave back to the community.
Library Volunteer of the Year – Chuck & Andrea Murdock
- Chuck and Andrea Murdock have lived in Northville for 35 years and in that time, they have been active members of the community, working to make Northville the great place it is to live, work, and play. Over the years, Chuck and Andrea have been dedicated volunteers for the Northville Historical Society, the Friends of Maybury State Park, Northville’s Youth Assistance Commission, the City of Northville's Historic District Commission, Northville’s Senior Advisory Commission, and other organizations.
- For years, the Murdocks have volunteered for the Northville District Library. As members of the Friends of NDL, they have helped to organize used book sales, among other valued activities. Their most invaluable contribution has been their dedication to the library’s home delivery service, which brings books to residents.
Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year – Sandi Haas
- Sandi Haas has dedicated countless hours to the Northville Chamber of Commerce as a member of our Ambassador Group, assisting in community and chamber events, office work at the Chamber, meeting new members, and so much more.
- As an interior designer, Sandi led a TEAM in refurbishing areas of the Chamber’s facility. Her positive spirit and creative ideas have helped propel the Chamber forward, and we are extremely appreciative of all her efforts. The Chamber and community are better places because of her sharing of her time and talents.
Chamber Small Business of the Year Award – Mayflower Towing
- Mayflower Towing is a proud member of the Chamber, and they are deeply committed to supporting the community. They actively participate in supporting events such as the Summer Concert Series, along with the Streets for Treats and the litany of parades in town including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Victorian, and the Lighted Holiday parade.
- Mayflower Towing also backed various organizations and initiatives in the Northville Community including activities at Maybury State Park, Moraine PTA events, Kiwanis Club, Goodfellows, the Educational Excellence Program, and the Northville Township employee golf outing. Mayflower is also a premier supporter of the Northville Educational Foundation.
Large Business of the Year Award – Henry Ford Health
- Henry Ford Health is one of Northville Chamber’s newer members, and they have wholeheartedly supported Northville community events. Henry Ford Health was the lead sponsor for the Northville 4th of July Parade and the Military Banner Program.
- These community events mean a lot to their organization as they both honor the dedication of Northville Veterans. Henry Ford Health has assisted the Chamber in supporting the greater community throughout the 2024 year. Northville is a better place because of the generosity of the Henry Ford Health TEAM.
Citizen of the Year – Rachelle Vartanian
- Rachelle Vartanian’s dedicated work at the Living and Learning Enrichment Center makes a daily positive, lasting impact on the lives of those she serves, both locally in Northville and throughout the State.
- Ms. Vartanian advocacy and support for those with disabilities and their families has resulted in a unique haven for learning, an atmosphere which cultivates friendships, a creative environment, and an area where building team support as an equal opportunity organization is key for all in the community.
- Rachelle exemplifies the spirit of inclusivity as she uses her personal experience to assist and inform others. She works tirelessly to provide opportunities for connection and is a true inspiration in the community.
Northvillians, I challenge you to get involved, just as those we recognized at the Awards Banquet this year have done. I encourage you to join the two new task forces (Bicentennial & Cemetery Restoration). With your help, we will move forward … Together!
Keep that Northville Faith of Sharing your Time and Talents!
