The attack on our rights

This week, 16 American human rights experts issued a statement ([link removed]) entitled ‘The Trump Administration’s Attacks on International Law and Institutions’.

With years of experience working within the United Nations human rights system, the prominent advocates for justice, the rule of law, and an end to discrimination condemned Donald Trump’s executive orders, saying they constitute the ‘most extensive assault on human rights and accountability by any US administration in modern history’.

The statement outlines the United States’ ‘betrayal’ of its commitment to international law, institutions, and the international community itself.

In the last three weeks, the president withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, the World Health Organization, and the UN Human Rights Council, froze funds for life-saving work impacting millions around the world, pulled out funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, and authorised sanctions against the International Criminal Court. According to UN experts, Donald Trump’s plans to ‘clean out Gaza’ could amount to the ethnic cleansing of the occupied Palestinian territory.

International humanitarian ([link removed]) , media freedom ([link removed]) , and digital rights ([link removed]) organisations and journalist networks ([link removed]) have outlined the serious and immediate impact of these decisions.

Collectively, these Executive Orders undermine the US’ historical commitment to international law and engagement with the global community. The end result is a United States, and a world, that is less safe, and less free.

The international institutions are not perfect, but for over 70 years they continued to promote global stability, by placing a universal recognition of fundamental rights at their heart. We call on US lawmakers to defend international engagement and fundamental freedoms, not withdraw American leadership.

Without the right to speak, the world is less safe, secure and prosperous. We will continue to monitor events, and to speak up for the need to uphold freedom of expression and other fundamental rights. We stand in solidarity with the millions affected by these seismic changes, and with the global civil society working tirelessly to keep the fight alive.
