Could Democrats Control Congress This Spring?
It feels like a pipe dream!
- The U.S. Congress has 435 voting members
- The math:
- 215 are Democrats
- 218 are Republican
- That equals 433 voting members today
- Matt Gaetz (FL-1) & Michael Waltz (FL-6) seats are vacant
- One more will be vacant when Elise Stefanik (NY-1) is likely confirmed as the next UN US Ambassador)
- That will be three seats special elections!
- IF somehow the Democrats picked up those three seats:
- 218 Democrats
- 217 Republican
- A Democrat as House Speaker!
OK, it's a long shot! However, consider:
- The April 1st special elections for the Florida seats are about 6 1/2 weeks away (the date of the NY-21st special election won't be set until after Stefanik is confirmed - her confirmation is being slowed).
- The new administration has been in office about 3 1/2 weeks and some people are rethinking their choices.
- Who knows where we'll be in another six weeks
