Your Latest Update from Congresswoman Kelly Morrison

Legislative Updates From Washington, DC

I am proud to be the first freshman Democrat to pass a bill this Congress!
Last month, I became the first freshman in the minority to pass a bill this Congress! My bipartisan Rural Small Business Resilience Act passed the House. This bill will ensure that rural small businesses are protected and supported when natural disasters hit. As the Ranking Member of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy and Supply Chains, I am proud that my first bill will protect small businesses – which are the backbone of our economy. I will continue to reach across the aisle and push every day to find common ground and get things done for our small business owners.

What happens next? The Rural Small Business Resilience Act has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and now heads to the U.S. Senate.

Supporting small business research and development
My second bipartisan bill has also passed the House! The bipartisan DOE and SBA Research Act will help small businesses tap into research and development opportunities. Minnesota is a proud home to a strong research and development ecosystem, which is an essential driver of economic growth and a significant determinant of business success – but too often small businesses don’t have the resources they need to engage in these projects. This bill will ensure that small businesses can remain competitive, grow, and thrive. I am proud to co-lead this bipartisan legislation because our small businesses must continue to play a central role in driving American innovation and ingenuity forward.

Advocating for our veterans
As a member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, I have been speaking out against the Trump-Vance Administration’s mass firings of veterans and VA employees. Over the past few weeks, the Trump-Vance Administration has fired thousands of veterans and thousands of VA employees, including at the Minneapolis VA. We also learned that the Trump Administration is planning to fire even more VA employees – and will be mass firing as many as 83,000 more VA workers, meaning services and care for our veterans will certainly be cut. This is completely unacceptable. At one of our House Committee on Veterans' Affairs hearings last week, I asked the Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars what these mass firings will mean for veterans and he said: "It's going to kill us."

Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country, and it is our duty to ensure we are providing the resources they need and deserve. I will keep fighting for that every day.

In-District Updates

Last month, I got to spend time back in-district with some amazing people and organizations – and lucky for me, my week back was also the coldest week we had this winter, which made my time back even more special!

With Anoka County Commissioners and Administrators

I had a great meeting with Commissioners of Anoka County to talk through the services they provide and the challenges and opportunities that they face. Anoka County is one of two counties I represent in Congress.

Talking with the team at the North Metro Clinic of Neighborhood HealthSource in Coon Rapids

I met with Neighborhood HealthSource, a non-profit community clinic to learn about the work they do and the communities they serve. As a doctor for more than 20 years, I especially love the time I get to spend at our local clinics. Neighborhood HealthSource is a critical resource that is providing quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare to our communities.

Meeting with Hennepin County Commissioners Jeffrey Lunde, Heather Edelson, and Kevin Anderson

I also had a great meeting with Hennepin County Commissioners to discuss opportunities for us to work together to continue to support the critical services that they provide. Their work impacts our entire community.

At St. David’s Center, hearing some amazing stories from their team

I got to tour the new St. David’s Center Minneapolis campus, which provides therapy and educational services to children living with autism and mental health disorders. Their staff are inspiring and dedicated to providing exceptional services to some of our most vulnerable children and families.

Meeting puppies Mel and Kim at The Bond Between

We also made a stop at The Bond Between, a one-of-a-kind animal well-being organization whose mission is to build, support, and reinforce the bond between people and pets. Their organization has rescued over 30,000 dogs and cats! They provide services like veterinary care, safe shelter, a pet food shelf, respite foster care, and focus on social services to keep pets connected with their humans. Not only am I thankful for their unique service to our community, it was also fun to snuggle some puppies!

Meeting with the Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota

I also got to meet with members of the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter, discussing their legislative priorities and how we can work together to advocate for research and funding for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

With Maria’s Voice, a domestic violence awareness advocacy center in Minnesota

It was great to meet with Maria’s Voice to hear about their work to engage our community on three pillars of domestic violence prevention: awareness, education, and safe action. In 2024 they directly educated over 480,000 people in our community and one by one are creating safer homes for all.

Fighting for a Budget That Works for Minnesotans

Last month, House Republicans passed a budget that calls for massive cuts to Medicaid (which is called Medical Assistance in Minnesota). These cuts would be devastating for Minnesotans and Americans across the country. More than one in four Minnesotans get their health insurance through Medicaid, including over 650,000 children. From new moms and babies to over half of all long-term care costs in Minnesota, Medicaid is essential to Minnesotans’ health and well-being. Not only would it gut health care coverage for children and families, seniors in nursing homes, and people living with disabilities, these cuts to Medicaid would also mean some of our local hospitals would have to cut services or shut down entirely. We cannot let these cuts go through – which is why I’m speaking out and fighting to protect Medicaid.

With Sen. Amy Klobuchar and local nursing home resident Bob Christianson, speaking out against proposed  Medicaid cuts

Last week, I met Bob Christianson, a resident at Ebenezer Senior Living’s Martin Luther Campus. Bob is 85 years old. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Marine Reserve – and like 62% of all nursing home residents, he gets his nursing home coverage through Medicaid. If Republicans go through with their plan to gut Medicaid, Bob and millions of seniors across America would be left without coverage. Bob is fiercely speaking out and fighting against these cuts – but at 85 years old, he shouldn’t have to. His care and quality of life should be protected, and I won’t vote for any budget resolution that threatens Medicaid and the well-being of our seniors.

Checking out the amazing prosthetics room at Gillette Children’s - Maple Grove Clinic

Before House Republicans passed their budget resolution last month, I met with Gillette Children’s Maple Grove Clinic. Gillette Children's provides specialty care to children with disabilities – the vast majority of whom qualify for Medicaid. It was my honor to meet with the wonderful staff and patients at Gillette Children’s, who told me how devastating cuts to Medicaid would impact them. My colleagues in Congress and I are working to prevent these cuts and protect children, families, the elderly and people living with disabilities.

With health care providers at North Memorial Maple Grove. Fun fact: North Memorial Maple Grove has delivered the most babies in Minnesota the last few years!

I also visited North Memorial Maple Grove and heard how devastating cuts to Medicaid would be for them. I toured their Family Birth Center and Emergency Department and learned about some critical challenges and opportunities the hospital is facing. Medicaid covers more than 40% of all births in the United States, and is essential for supporting the health of moms and new babies in Minnesota and across the country. I also spoke with the health care providers about how cuts to Medicaid wouldn't just affect Medicaid recipients' care, but all of our care because services could be cut and clinics and hospitals could shut down.

Speaking out against Medicaid cuts on MSNBC

I joined MSNBC’s Ali Velshi to explain what Medicaid cuts would mean to Americans — and why President Trump and his Republican majority are prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires over the well-being of the American people.
