This Valentine’s Day, we’re in the spirit of reconciliation.
Republicans in Congress are celebrating by proposing a budget reconciliation plan ([link removed]) that includes massive tax cuts for the wealthy. So why not reach out to your ex about reconciling your ill-fated relationship? Let’s all be destructive this weekend!
Our new polling ([link removed]) in collaboration with Groundwork Collaborative and the Student Borrower Protection Center finds that a strong majority of voters want programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP to be expanded or protected. Meanwhile, fewer than 15% of voters want to see more tax breaks for wealthy households and large corporations.
Honestly, watching Republicans try to plan a budget is like watching your partner try to find last-minute dinner reservations the morning of Valentine’s — it’s guaranteed to go poorly for everyone.
Many GOP proposals for the budget are unpopular with likely voters, including decreasing Pell Grant amounts, taxing student scholarships like income, eliminating Parent PLUS loans, and eliminating income-based student loan repayment.

Y’all deserve someone who will make you their sole priority, not their side piece. It’s about time to realize that the GOP is just not that into you.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:
Trump’s reheating his first-term nachos and they’re extra soggy this time
Can we just put Elon Musk’s kid in charge of the country? Becausewiping his nose ([link removed]) on the Resolute desk is probably the most productive thing that’s happened in that office in weeks, with Trump outsourcing all his work to Elon and all.
In a new survey ([link removed]) about voters’ perceptions of the Trump administration so far, we find that nearly 3 in 4 voters (73%) say that billionaires have too much influence over federal government decisions, while majorities say the same about corporations (67%) and CEOs (66%).
And when we asked voters to choose from a list of words to describe the Trump administration, a plurality, including nearly half of Independents, say “chaotic.” I mean, can you think of a better example of chaotic evil?

Meanwhile, only 9% of voters say that Trump is most focused on the economy, even though the cost of living was a top concern for voters in 2024 ([link removed]) . At this point, we’re basically all reheating our own nachos because it’s too expensive to buy new groceries — and our president is too busy trying to rename bodies of water to actually do anything about it.

Voters oppose Trump’s proposed “take over” of Gaza
Trump has never seen a piece of land that he didn’t want to put an ugly tower with his name on top of. And unfortunately, Palestine is no exception.
Last week, Trump laid out his plan to “take over” and “own” Gaza, and transform it from a “demolition site” into the “Riviera of the Middle East” — aka, ethnic cleansing!
However, Trump’s proposal is highly unpopular ([link removed]) with likely voters, and even members of his own party are split on his statement.
After being informed that such a takeover would require forcibly resettling the roughly 1.8 million Palestinians who live in Gaza into neighboring countries, 64% of voters, including a majority of Democrats (85%) and Independents (63%), say they oppose this proposal. Republicans are more divided, with 46% in support and 43% opposed.

And when asked if they would support sending troops to the Middle East to take ownership of Gaza, 69% are opposed, including Republicans by a -11-point margin.
