Happy Valentine’s Day, John!
Since it’s the day of love, we wanted to share with you why our policy team loves their field. From Great Salt Lake to Air Quality and Climate, from Democracy to Energy, our team is passionate about the work they do and we want to share that with you (and a few Valentine’s Day cards so you can share the love as well)!

Did you know Salt Lake City’s original name was Great Salt Lake City ? The lake is the beating heart of this valley, and its decline reminds us of our deep interconnectedness with each other and the land. Toxic dust from the drying lake threatens the health of Utahns statewide, while shrinking water levels remind us how precious water is in our desert home—and the urgent need to live within ecological limits.
The climate crisis can feel overwhelming—where do we even begin? For me, the work for Great Salt Lake has been that starting point—a tangible, place-based, and community-driven way to take action, with countless ways to engage. I’ve fallen in love with its otherworldly beauty, its vibrant ecosystem, and the best sunsets on Earth. I’m grateful that I get to spend my time fighting for such a special place!

One of my favorite things about air quality and climate policy is its potential to positively impact public health. In college, I worked on a project where we interviewed families with asthmatic children across Salt Lake County. A lot of families shared how wintertime inversions and summertime wildfires (exacerbated by climate change) worsened their kids’ respiratory struggles and affected their quality of life. T he most rewarding part of my work is thinking about how our legislation can help Utahns live happier, healthier lives.

Energy is at the center of everything. It powers how we communicate, travel, cook, and exist in society. Understanding the process of how energy is generated and then switching on a light in my house is fascinating. Renewable energy, in particular, is incredible—the earth naturally creating energy? How cool is that! The electricity sector is a major contributor to climate change. Learning how it works at the local, state, and federal levels has let me take boring, complicated info and turn it into something fun and exciting for the average person. That’s important to me and why I fell in love with this work!

Government, at its heart, is the process of deciding how we want to live and work together in our communities. Every single person should have a say in that process. By promoting voting access, accountability, and civic engagement, we can create policy that builds and truly reflects the kind of world we want to live in. I think that is beautiful.
I love that people can be empowered with the knowledge and skillsets of a healthy democratic process to go on and make change for the issues that are most important to them. By voting, contacting your legislators, running for office, and more, you can make a difference for the land, air, and water in Utah.

We are so grateful to have a policy team passionate about the issues Stewardship Utah cares about, and they work hard to protect and advocate for Utahns. Between networking with legislators, helping draft good bills, stopping bad bills, sharing updates with you, and more, we need them to know just how loved they are. While you’re spreading the love this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to give a shout to your favorite nonprofits, policy wonks, and legislators! ❤️
