Taking on the Fentanyl Crisis

Dear Fellow Iowan,

For years now, the fentanyl crisis has plagued our nation. According to the CDC, fentanyl is now the leading cause of death amongst Americans ages 18-45 and is responsible for over 70% of all drug related deaths in America.

469 Iowans and over 100,000 Americans died by overdosing in 2022, with that number expected to be much higher in 2023, and 2024. This is the highest amount since 1999.

Have you been impacted by the fentanyl crisis?

Now more than ever, the fentanyl crisis demands urgent action from Congress. This deadly epidemic is devastating families and communities across the nation, and we cannot afford to stand by while it continues to claim lives. That’s why I am proud to announce a significant step forward in our efforts to combat this crisis.

Last week, the House passed H.R. 467, the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act or the HALT Fentanyl Act. This legislation would make the currently temporary Schedule I category for fentanyl, or anything mixed with it, permanent. It would supply law enforcement with the tools needed to keep these dangerous drugs off the streets. And, it would support research efforts to understand the effects of fentanyl-related substances on people's health.

I am proud to support this bill and will continue working hard to keep Iowans safe, and keep fentanyl off our streets.
