Recognizing the heroic efforts of the Community Magnet Charter Elementary bus drivers who evacuated students to safety during the Palisades Fire
Dear friends and partners,
As we continue to recover from the devastating Palisades wildfire, the District recently announced a $2.2 billion recovery plan ([link removed]) , setting ambitious goals to rebuild our damaged schools with urgency, sustainability, and intention for the health and safety of our kids, families, and staff. We are also close to finalizing a temporary location for Palisades High so that their students can resume in-person instruction by late next month.
This week, the Board also passed my resolution recognizing the emergency responders and essential school staff who worked around the clock from the moment the fires broke out ([link removed]) —evacuating students, keeping them safe, and ensuring they were supported in the aftermath.
Finally, when students return from the long weekend on Tuesday, LAUSD’s new cell phone ban will officially be in effect district-wide ([link removed]) . This policy is aimed at reducing distractions, improving mental health, and keeping students engaged in learning. We have seen positive results in schools that have already adopted a phone-free policy, and we are committed to working with all our school communities to ensure a smooth transition for everyone.
Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
Over the past few weeks, my team and I have been thrilled to recognize the heroic efforts of the bus drivers who evacuated students at Community ES, check in on students at staff at the reopened Canyon ES, meet Shirley Ave ES' new principal, visit classrooms at Hesby Oaks, Lanai ES, and Brockton ES, visit both Uni HS and the Pali HS administrators currently working on Uni's campus, host our most recent BD4 Youth Advisory Council and Teacher Advisory Group meetings, and celebrate talented students at the annual Soundtrap Beat Battle at Spotify.

In the Spotlight: Revere Counselor steps up to support Palisades families
Brett Shibata, the dedicated and compassionate Head Counselor at Paul Revere Middle School, has truly been going above and beyond to support students and families following the Palisades wildfire. In addition to his regular workload, he has been working tirelessly to create digital packets of critical paperwork and student photos for families who lost their homes. His efforts have brought comfort and eased worries during a heartbreaking time. When he’s not making a difference at school, Brett loves the outdoors, skiing, snowboarding, and spending time with his family.
