MAGA vs. Education

The MAGA movement has never hidden its disdain for public education, and now, with Donald Trump leading the charge, they’ve officially started dismantling the Department of Education from the inside. According to The Hill, Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed that the administration has begun mass layoffs as the first step toward shutting down the department altogether—one of Trump’s long-standing goals.

This week, over 1,300 employees—nearly half of the department’s workforce—were abruptly terminated. McMahon framed the move as eliminating “bureaucratic bloat,” but the reality is far more sinister. This is not about improving education; it’s about gutting federal oversight, slashing funding, and weakening public schools to make way for a right-wing agenda that puts corporate interests and political ideology above students' needs.

What’s at Stake?

Without the Department of Education, federal student aid, Pell Grants, and funding for special education programs would be thrown into chaos. Civil rights protections that prevent discrimination in schools could be weakened, and critical oversight of education standards would disappear. The Trump administration claims that these services will continue under different departments, but make no mistake—this is about stripping away federal responsibility for ensuring equal access to quality education.

MAGA extremists have long argued that education should be left solely to the states, knowing full well that this would allow deep-red legislatures to push partisan, right-wing curriculum changes while gutting public schools in favor of private and religious institutions.

Their real goal? To weaken teachers’ unions, eliminate discussions of race and history they find inconvenient, and replace fact-based learning with political propaganda.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about one department—it’s part of a broader MAGA strategy to dismantle the federal government, erode public trust in institutions, and hand control to their political allies. They’ve attacked public education for years, banning books, censoring teachers, and slashing school funding, all while pushing taxpayer dollars into private and religious schools. Now, they’re making their most aggressive move yet.

The Fight to Save Public Education

The elimination of the Department of Education would require congressional approval, but Trump and his allies are already laying the groundwork. A MAGA-controlled Congress could rubber-stamp this plan if voters don’t stop them in November. Education advocates are preparing to challenge these attacks through legal action and civic engagement, but the fight cannot be won without public pressure.

No Dem Left Behind is committed to stopping the MAGA war on public education. The stakes couldn’t be higher—the future of our nation's education depends on protecting our schools from extremist attacks. If we don’t act now, we risk handing our education system over to those who want to rewrite history, defund public schools, and turn learning into a political weapon.
