Friend,
Yesterday, the Trump administration took action to deprive our students of what they need to thrive.
By firing half of the staff of the Department of Education, President Donald Trump followed through on his Project 2025 plans and eviscerated the department’s ability to function. This means it will be much harder to get resources to students in need—including students with disabilities, English language learners and students in poverty.
This is unacceptable, and we will continue to fight back. Write to your members of Congress here and tell them: No cuts to education!
Gutting the Department of Education means fewer teachers, more crowded classrooms, and more mental health and behavioral challenges for students. It means fewer students will be able to go to college and pursue well-paying jobs. It means higher local and state taxes to fill the void that Trump’s cuts leave in their wake.
The president claims he wants the states to control education—but states and local school districts already run public schools. They make virtually all student decisions. Nobody wants that to change. Similarly, nobody wants more red tape or unnecessary, inefficient bureaucracy. But here, too, there are ways to achieve efficiency without betraying the promises made to America’s children.
By gutting the Department of Education, Trump is taking away opportunities from students. We can’t let that happen. Tell Congress: No cuts to education.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
