Email from Judy Chu This week, Congress must pass legislation to keep the government open, or risk a government shutdown. Dear John, This week, Congress must pass legislation to keep the government open, or risk a government shutdown. Before Republicans get on Fox News and accuse the Democrats of encouraging a shutdown, let me tell you the reasons this budget is not good for America. It’s simple; the GOP is proposing preposterous cuts to vital programs that our most vulnerable Americans use. The Republican resolution makes drastic, damaging cuts to essential government programs such as the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Veterans Affairs. It has no constraints whatsoever on the power of Elon Musk or DOGE, which means they can continue to get away with stealing your private information and illegally closing programs without Congressional authority. And this bill would do absolutely nothing to protect Medicaid, which in California is known as Medi-Cal, and which Republicans have said explicitly is on the chopping block in order to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. With the Republicans controlling the executive and legislative branches, the GOP are circumventing our checks and balances with ludicrous policy plans and harmful budget cuts that will hurt American families. The House Democrats won’t stand by while Republicans cut food and medical assistance for working families. With this budget heading to a vote, I want to remind you that I will never stop fighting for my district no matter which billionaire is in the White House.
