Friend,
The Sanders Institute is honored to welcome Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, as our newest fellow!
Sara Nelson is the fearless union leader we need! For the past decade, she has demonstrated that the best way for working people to increase their power is to use it.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sara designed the successful payroll support program, an historic Workers First relief program. This program kept aviation workers connected to their paychecks, healthcare, and benefits for 16 months while banning stock buybacks and dividends industry-wide and capping executive compensation for two years post-relief—ensuring the industry remained fairer and more equitable throughout the pandemic.
Sara recognizes that the American labor movement can’t survive by merely serving its current members―it must keep growing. With American union density dipping below 10% for the first time since the New Deal, Sara Nelson is leading the charge for new organizing efforts. That includes organizing the nearly 30,000 flight attendants at Delta and supporting initiatives that aid independent unions in organizing a first contract.
Worker power scares oligarchs more than anything―and no one is better at wielding that power than Sara Nelson.
