John, last night the Department of Education announced that they are laying off about 50% of their workforce. They’re closing seven of twelve offices that investigate civil rights violations in our schools.
According to the new Education Secretary, these layoffs reflect the DOE’s “commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers.” What bullsh*t. We KNOW violent hate crimes are on the rise, and letting discrimination in schools go unchecked will only put more kids at risk.
The DOE also runs programs that improve school safety, expand mental health services, strengthen emergency management planning, and SO much more—all critical federal resources that not all states are equipped to handle themselves
If we continue down this path, we can kiss things like pre-K, after-school programs, counselors, technology, and more goodbye. Everything is at risk.
The Trump administration doesn’t care if kids eat lunch, let alone their safety in the classroom. They just care about whatever this “government efficiency” is, while destroying the country in the process.
John, without the Department of Education, our students are at a much higher risk for gun violence. We are not going to let this happen. We are DEMANDING our government keep kids safe. Will you chip in $20.25 to protect our students?
Onwards,
Team MFOL
Your Personal Invite To the Movement Fund 💌💙 At March For Our Lives, we call our monthly supporter program The Movement Fund. Why are monthly recurring donors so important? The amount of one-time individual donations we receive as an organization varies vastly from month to month. Without a steady stream of monthly donations coming in our door, it would be impossible to accurately plan our budgets, create long-term strategies to win a future free from gun violence, plan and execute on-the-ground organizing efforts, recruit and train more gun safety champions, and more. |
