New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen just announced that she will not seek re-election in 2026.

Earlier this year, Gary Peters of Michigan and Tina Smith of Minnesota also announced their retirements from the Senate. All three of these seats were going to be Republican targets in 2026 regardless, but without an incumbent the GOP attack even harder to flip these seats and grow their majority.

It’s critical that we build enough strength to defend whoever becomes the Democratic nominees in all three of these states as well as defending Jon Ossoff in Georgia and trying to take down Susan Collins in Maine and Thom Tillis in North Carolina. As you can see, we will have a tall order ahead of us in 2026. We need to defend every Democratic seat and flip four Republican seats. North Carolina and Maine won’t be enough. We must win special elections in Ohio–Vance’s seat–and Florida–Rubio’s seat–as well.

It’s going to be very difficult and it most certainly won’t be cheap. But it is absolutely necessary to bring a blue wave to the Senate if we want to stand up to Trump and Elon Musk.
