Dear Friend,

The Republican-led leadership in Congress wants to pass a bill that would literally snatch food from the tables of hungry children and hardworking families in order to give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to the super rich and mega-corporations. This proposed bill would drastically cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps), which benefits approximately 40 million people, including parents, older adults, disabled people, workers, and 1 out of every 5 children in our country. [1]

Quick signature: Tell President Trump and leaders in Congress to take cuts to SNAP (food stamps) off the table!

SNAP is the nation’s first line of defense against hunger. Almost 80% of people who benefit from SNAP are children, seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans. [2] Because SNAP already has work restrictions, most SNAP beneficiaries who can work already do work, but do not earn enough money to make ends meet. It’s important that those who can’t work–because of care responsibilities, disability, or age–also are able to access this important nutrition assistance.

We need an economy that respects people by providing access to food assistance so people can work, take care of their families, and contribute to their communities. Tell Congress: You have to do more to make sure that people who work hard to care for and provide for their families have the opportunities and tools they need–like SNAP– to build a good life.

The cost of groceries keeps going up and families’ wages are staying steady, if not going down. SNAP is a necessity for those families struggling with rising costs, and the program is designed for exact moments such as this. If SNAP is cut, food pantries would not be able to make up the difference or meet the overwhelming need–SNAP provides roughly nine meals for every one meal provided by Feeding America’s food banks. SNAP also benefits the local economy; every dollar spent on SNAP benefits generates up to $1.80 in economic activity. [3] When more families struggle to make ends meet, SNAP responds quickly and effectively to meet that need, boosting families, communities, small family farms, and local economies in the process.

Tell members of Congress to reject cuts to SNAP that are a lifeline for tens of millions of families and children.

Mary Beth is a member of one of these families, and is a MomsRising volunteer. She is raising four of her grandchildren and lives in a Western North Carolina town that was hit hard by Hurricane Helene last year. She shares:

“I work hard to make sure my grandkids have everything they need, but I’m on fixed income and it’s never been easy. I work a part-time job making 8 dollars an hour at a coin laundry in my area to supplement my disability. My family is barely making it. At times I’ve had to skip refilling my prescriptions so my grandkids would not have to skip meals. This shouldn’t be going on. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. We should be caring for our children. Right now I’m terrified because Republican leaders seem poised to take critical resources away from my family, that would gut programs like SNAP, but without SNAP I wouldn’t be able to put food on the table. Even with SNAP benefits it doesn’t get me through the month. I still have to rely on food pantries and food distribution sites. With the rising cost of food we are struggling enough as it is, just like so many others in my area.”

Tell President Trump and the U.S. Congress: Put families over billionaires and protect SNAP benefits that hardworking families like Mary Beth’s rely on!

Access to SNAP has been shown to improve students’ test scores, improve birth outcomes, lower health care costs, and much more. [4] SNAP benefits currently average only $6.20 per person per day; this modest amount, however, is significant enough to lift more than 2 million SNAP participants above the poverty line. [5] Republican Members of Congress want to reduce even this very modest amount in order to pay for their massive tax cuts to the super wealthy and mega corporations.

SIGN NOW to tell the U.S. Congress: Don’t take food away from working families to give handouts to billionaires!

Together we will stand in solidarity and act to support all families!
