This Presidents’ Day, we want to take a moment to talk about our greatest president, and how to apply the lessons he taught us to today’s fight to maintain our democratic republic. George Washington is the greatest American president because he allowed other American presidents to follow him.

He did not need to step down after serving his eight years. Many of our most revered founding fathers pressured him to remain in office. It was a highly volatile time for our new nation, with an uncertain future, and some of the most powerful men around Washington worried that no one except the hero who had led us to freedom could hold it all together.

Had those men gotten their way, our country would not have grown into the strong democratic republic that it is today. It would have taken a new type of autocracy, the exact form of government we had just fought a war to escape.

Washington understood the value of peacefully passing the baton to the next leader. He understood how difficult a democratic transfer of power could be, yet he was determined to ensure that that transfer happened all the same.

American democracy could have been killed in the cradle. But Washington ensured its survival. He did not even lose an election, he simply recognized the people would never choose to replace him, and he willingly gave up his power to become an absolute ruler.

Washington is the greatest because he willingly and intentionally ensured that our democracy would live. Now, we face Donald Trump who is willingly and intentionally attempting to ensure that it dies.

Donald Trump spent 2016 claiming our elections were rigged if he lost. He tried to violently overthrow the government after losing in 2020. And now he is using his presidential power to destroy our government, silence his critics, and beat his opposition into submission.

Donald Trump is the reason No Surrender exists and we will not be silent. No matter how many threats he makes. No matter how many agencies DOGE tries to compromise. No matter how many lies the White House spin to try and trick the American people into believing that Donald Trump is and deserves to be King.

We will not back down. We will not be silent. We will fight back. And we will win.

It won’t be easy. It won’t be risk-free. But it is necessary to fight for the democratic republic that Washington fought for almost two and a half centuries ago.
