Friends and Comrades-

We tried really hard to think of a good President's Day joke for this. We failed. We apologize. However, we do have an important pressure campaign for Housing Justice, a protest against our beloved Federal Government, and our monthly general Meeting coming up!Please read on to learn more:

Call Senate HAPAC for Rent Control!

SB 216(Legalizing Rent Control) has stalled in the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee and is not scheduled for a hearing as of this writing. This is an unconscionable attempt to bury this incredibly important bill! Please reach out to the members of the members of the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee ?and let them know you support this bill. We cannot build solidarity when housing justice is so desperately lacking in our state!

Legislative Updates

Unfortunately, many, though not all, of the bills we have our eyes on seem to be stuck in Committee at the moment. However, with this being a longer session, we still hope to see progress on them. Please make sure to contact Committee members to support these bills!

?

HB 169, Public Expression Protection Act was passed out of House Consumer Protection and Public Affairs and is now with the House Judiciary Committee. This important bill will significantly increase protections against SLAPP lawsuits, which are often used to intimidate and curtail constitutionally protected speech. This is a long overdue bill in NM, which has some of the weakest anti-SLAPP protections in the country.?

?

HB 128(Local Solar Access Fund) is with the House Appropriations and Finance Committee. You can sign up to help support this bill with Public Power New Mexico at this link.

?

Sadly, and amended version ofHB 137(Strategic Water Supply Act,)? a dangerous bill that will risk the health of New Mexican by allowing wastewater from oil and gas exploration to be used for potentially dangerous purposes, passed out of the House Agriculture, Acequias, and Water Resources Committee, despite members of the committee who voted to pass it expressing serious ambivalence about the bill. However, this terrible bill is now with the House Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee. Please contact members of this committee and urge them to vote NO on HB 137!
