Misperceptions about vaping may deter young smokers from switching

A new study involving University of Bristol researchers suggests that young adults are more likely to quit smoking and take up vaping if they understand the relative harms of both behaviours. However, widespread misinformation has led many to incorrectly believe that vaping is as harmful, or even worse, than smoking.

The study, using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, found that smokers who perceived vaping as less harmful at age 23/24 were more likely to switch six years later. Researchers warn that rising misperceptions could prevent smokers from choosing a less harmful alternative. They stress the need for better public awareness campaigns to correct misunderstandings and help more people quit smoking.

New smoke-free zones introduced to protect children in Kent

Thanet District Council and Kent County Council are launching designated smoke-free spaces as part of a campaign to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke, particularly for children and young people. The initiative aims to discourage smoking and vaping in public areas such as parks, play areas, high streets, and outside schools.

Local schools and residents will have the opportunity to design signage for the campaign through workshops, which will also offer advice on quitting smoking and vaping. Officials hope the initiative will not only protect public health but also reduce the likelihood of young people taking up smoking.

Physical activity in childhood linked to lower risk of smoking

A new study suggests that regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in childhood could significantly reduce the likelihood of smoking initiation by age 13. Researchers from the University of Bristol tracked over 2,500 children from age 11 to 24 and found that those who engaged in MVPA were far less likely to start smoking.

The study highlights a strong association between sustained physical activity and a lower risk of smoking into young adulthood. However, overall activity levels declined with age, and researchers stress the need for supportive policies to prevent smoking initiation in adolescence.
