Firearm Purchaser Licensing Laws

 

The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions has released a new report with the Consortium for Risk-based Firearm Policy, "Firearm Purchaser Licensing: Research Evidence to Inform State Policy," recommending that states adopt comprehensive firearm purchaser licensing laws with five core components proven to reduce gun violence: 

 

 

Research shows that firearm purchaser licensing laws can significantly reduce firearm deaths, including an 11% reduction in urban gun homicides and a 56% decrease in mass shooting incidents.

"There is solid evidence that when states adopt firearm purchaser licensing laws with measures like safety training and background checks, reductions in gun-related homicides and suicides follow," says Silvia Villarreal, MPP, the report’s lead author.
