Here’s the situation, John:

You already know that Trump is a threat to our democracy. Now Congressional Republicans are trying to push through legislation that would make it even harder for millions of people to vote.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is the GOP’s latest attempt to curtail voting rights. The bill would require voters all over the country to provide either a passport or a birth certificate to vote.
|
|
Here’s the issue with that:
- More than 21 million Americans don’t have access to either of those documents
- Anyone who’s changed their name since birth (including millions of married women) won’t have their new names on their birth certificates
- Roughly 49% of Americans don’t have a passport, especially people in poorer states and rural areas

|
This bill is nothing more than an attempt to keep people from voting, John. And we’re not going to stand for it.

Republicans know their majority in Congress is slim, and in just a few weeks there’s a very real chance that control of the House will change due to special elections. When Kansas passed a similar law, 31,000 eligible American citizens were blocked from registering to vote.
