Dear friend,
During this Black History Month, it’s important we highlight and celebrate the impact that Black Americans have made in the history of our nation. We stand on the shoulders of giants.
From the first Africans arriving in Jamestown in 1619 to the leaders of today, Black individuals have shaped the course of Virginia's history, economy, culture, and progress.
Black History Month is not just a time to reflect on the past; it’s an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black Virginians, while also acknowledging the challenges they have faced and continue to overcome. This month allows us to honor those who have fought for civil rights, equality, and justice, and to commit ourselves to building a future where these ideals are fully realized for all.
In Virginia, giants like Booker T. Washington, Maggie Lena Walker, Oliver Hill, and countless others continue to loom large. These heroes and she-roes who have shaped our communities should not only be remembered for the balance of 28 days, but celebrated and uplifted 365 days a year. Black History Month reminds us of the ongoing work we must do to address inequality, amplify diverse voices, and ensure that every Virginian, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive.
Let us take this time to reflect on how we can all contribute to a more inclusive and equitable Virginia. Whether through education, advocacy, or simply listening to the stories of our Black neighbors, friends, and colleagues, there are countless ways we can honor this important month.
Thank you for your continued commitment to building a better, more just Virginia for all.
Sincerely,
Levar Stoney
