Comprehensive education reporting made possible by readers
Dear Reader,
The Hechinger Report is watching to see how the new administration’s approach will affect the day-to-day reality for educators, parents and students.
In the last few weeks, we…
- Compiled the litany of orders and actions designed to reshape the federal government's role in education and will update this list as President Trump’s second term unfolds
- Heard and reported on DOGE’s (Department of Government Efficiency) cuts to the Department of Education’s evaluation studies and data collection
- Highlighted how child care programs search for ways to ease fears for children, staff and families as immigration raids ramp up
- Reported on how the Trump administration’s efforts to downsize the government threaten the Bureau of Indian Education and the slow progress it has made in serving Native students
And while the changes at the federal level remain of vital importance, Hechinger also remains focused on what’s happening in classrooms and on campuses, and is keeping an eye on what education institutions are up to. Toward these ends, we’ve recently published stories on: Colleges rebranding humanities majors as job-friendly; School-age street sellers in India who can do incredible math in their heads but not in the classroom; and Districts in Texas that are spending big on schools tailor-made... for 4-year-olds.
