Dear Neighbors,

I hope this finds you safe as the ongoing snow storm continues! I’m optimistic about nicer weather ahead and hope to see you at my next Community Coffee Hour on Saturday [ [link removed] ]. We’ll gather at 9:00 a.m. at Dunn Bros (15265 Galaxie Ave, Apple Valley, MN 55124) to chat about items moving through the state House, what I’ve been working on, and our latest state budget forecast, which will be announced tomorrow.

Here’s a snapshot of our work in the Minnesota House:

*Committee Work & Federal Cuts *

In accordance with our co-GOP-DFL governing agreement, the House Republicans will continue to control committee gavels and the overall state agenda until a March 11 special election, which is anticipated to bring us back to a 67-67 tie.

I’ve been making the most out of these weeks, despite the discouraging news of a proposed federal funding freeze. As the DFL Lead on the House Health Finance Committee, I’m especially honed in on the proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid by the Trump administration and how this will impact the more than 25% of our state's population, including 650,000 children and 125,000 Minnesotans with disabilities.Even some Republicans agree and have sent a letter [ [link removed] ] to their counterparts in congress to plead: simply cutting the budget is not going to take away our responsibilities to the aged, those with disabilities and mental health needs, children, and the poor.

On the state level, I’m authoring a variety of health focused bills, two of which have received public hearings and have bipartisan support. The first would invest in opioid prevention and education [ [link removed] ] to empower young people with knowledge and strategies so they can make informed, life-saving decisions.

The second bill [ [link removed] ] would expand Medical Assistance coverage for community-based mental health care, providing services to address behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment.

Please always feel free to reach out with ideas on legislation to help our Apple Valley communities thrive in Minnesota.
