Last night, Donald Trump stood before Congress and tried to sell his warped vision of America. He declared “America is back,” but back to what? Back to open corruption? Back to blatant authoritarianism? Back to a government that serves billionaires like Elon Musk while gutting protections for everyday Americans?
From the moment he stepped up to the podium, the night was a spectacle. Just three minutes in, Trump’s delusional claim that he won the popular vote by a “large margin” was met with loud boos from the chamber—so much so that Speaker Mike Johnson threatened to restore order by force. When that didn’t work, he sent in the Sergeant at Arms to remove a protester, as JD Vance literally jumped for joy at the chaos. This is what Republican leadership looks like now.
Trump was eager to tout his record—bragging about signing over a hundred executive orders, a funny way to take credit for governing by fiat instead of working with Congress. He celebrated killing the electric vehicle mandate, yet government contracts for Tesla vehicles are bigger than ever, proving once again that Trump’s “anti-woke” crusade is just another grift. Rashida Tlaib called it out for what it is, holding up a sign that read “Musk Steals.”
If last night made one thing clear, it’s this: Trump and his allies are done pretending. They aren’t governing—they’re ruling. They aren’t interested in democracy—they’re celebrating its destruction.
