Dear Neighbor,
Tonight, I will be attending the State of the Union along with my guest, Irvine pediatrician, Dr. Eric Ball. Dr. Ball, along with his colleagues, delivers some of the best healthcare in America to hundreds of thousands of kids across Orange County. However, Speaker Mike Johnson and far-right lawmakers in the House voted for a plan that sets a goal for cutting $880 billion from vital social welfare programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and CHIP.
Over 42,000 children live in California’s 47th district, many of whom are Dr. Ball’s patients, may lose healthcare under this proposal. It's not just children who would be harmed by steep cuts to Medicaid. Eighteen percent of our neighbors rely on Medicaid coverage to make healthcare affordable. Of the over 89,000 veterans who call Orange County home, over fifteen percent of them rely on their Medicaid coverage.
That’s why I’m fighting back. Last Tuesday, I voted against these drastic cuts and signed a letter to Speaker Johnson expressing my outrage at the harm it could bring to communities across America. I’ve spent the past month meeting with doctors, community health clinicians, and patients to better understand what these cuts would mean to their businesses and to their quality of care. I will continue to stand in the way of any attempts to take away the healthcare services so many hardworking Orange County families rely on.
