Donald Trump is just a few hours away from delivering the first joint address to Congress of his second term. While I don’t yet know the specifics of his remarks, here’s one thing I know for sure about this evening:

I’m honored to be joined by Liz Crandall, a former United States Forest Service Ranger from Bend, Oregon.

Liz is a public servant through and through. From extinguishing abandoned campfires to keeping park visitors away from dangerous areas, Liz and her fellow rangers keep our communities safe from the threat of catastrophic wildfires.

But last month, Liz was fired by DOGE. She was one of at least 16 Deschutes National Forest employees to be fired by Elon Musk in the DOGE rampages.

Not only was this decision cruel, but it’s just foolish. Firing US Forest Service Rangers, especially in the wake of devastating wildfires across the country, is only going to make our communities more vulnerable to these disasters.

Listen, when I ran for Congress, I vowed to work across the aisle and partner with anyone to lower costs, create jobs, and improve the day-to-day for Oregonians. I stand by that.

So tonight, I’ll certainly be listening for ways that I can partner with anyone to get that done.

But mark my words: So long as Trump, Musk, and the billionaire bros continue to come after our community, decimate public safety efforts, and kick dedicated public servants — like Liz — to the curb, you can count on the fact that I’ll be fighting back.
