Trump is going to address Congress tonight. Here’s what you need to know.
Tonight, John, Donald Trump will be addressing a joint session of Congress for the first time in his second presidency. Before he gets up and lies to the American people, here are a few things you need to know.
Trump and his administration have attacked the Constitution again and again since retaking office. Many of his executive orders, such as his attempt to end birthright citizenship, go beyond the power of what a president can do. He is going to act like this is normal, but he knows he doesn’t have the authority.
Many of Trump’s actions have explicitly undermined the courts. And now his allies claim he shouldn’t have to follow some court orders, showing blatant disregard for checks and balances. Elon Musk and his cronies have even lashed out at judges who rule against the administration. Remember: The courts uphold the Constitution, not the presidency.
He will undoubtedly try to project power – remember when he referred to himself as a king? – and confidence that he will get his agenda enacted. But in America, we aren’t ruled by kings. We are ruled by law and order. Trump cannot unilaterally pass his MAGA agenda by overstepping the courts and Congress.
