Friends,
Yesterday should’ve marked an important milestone – if all parties had
begun negotiating earlier and stayed at the table, we could have ushered
in the beginning of the second phase of the long-awaited ceasefire and
hostage release agreement.
Instead, the deal that was finally reuniting Israeli hostages with their
loved ones and allowing Palestinian families to begin picking up the
pieces of their lives is in an extremely precarious position.
Rather than building on this progress, Israelis and Palestinians may end
up back on a path toward devastation: The resumption of a gut-wrenching
war.
Yesterday also brought news that the Netanyahu government decided to
withhold all aid to war-weary Palestinians in Gaza, an illegal act of
collective punishment targeted at innocent civilians. It’s morally,
legally and strategically indefensible, and will only serve to undercut
any pathway to a long-term agreement.
We at J Street firmly believe that a diplomatic agreement is the only way
to free the remaining hostages from captivity, resume the desperately
needed flow of humanitarian aid and lay the groundwork to ensure that
Hamas is no longer able to govern Gaza.
It’s imperative that US, Egyptian and Qatari mediators do everything
possible to ensure that Israel and Hamas move urgently toward Phase II of
the ceasefire framework. Negotiations must continue now so that the break
in major hostilities can extend. Israeli and Palestinian lives depend on
it.
To discuss the latest developments in this evolving situation, please
register to join us for a policy briefing with renowned Israeli journalist
and military analyst Amos Harel and J Street Policy Fellow Yael Patir,
happening tomorrow, March 4 at 2pm Eastern.
