As I wrap up my last day on staff at Love146, I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you. To all of you. Thank you for being part of what began as a dream. For being a part of this work that really matters. For caring so deeply and for some of you…for so long. This has been the most heartbreaking, joyful, hard, challenging and breathtaking journey of a lifetime.
As many of you know, through the years I have often described Love146 as a ship. A ship with a clear destination: the end of child trafficking and exploitation. Nothing less. Like I have said so many times, this ship is not a cruise ship, luxury liner or racing yacht. Instead, it was built for endurance and to withstand storms. It has been the honor of my life to have had the opportunity to be at the helm of this beautiful, battered, and incredibly seaworthy ship we call Love146. And to have sailed with a crew such as you. The reality is, I have not been at the helm alone. And I could not be more confident and excited to know that Glaydon de Freitas will be at the helm sailing us into the future.
Author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in his book Citadelle wrote:
“One will weave the canvas; another will fell a tree by the light of his ax. Yet another will forge nails, and there will be others who observe the stars to learn how to navigate. And yet all will be as one. Building a boat isn't about weaving canvas, forging nails, or reading the sky. It's about giving a shared taste for the sea, by the light of which you will see nothing contradictory but rather a community of love.”
At the end of the day, Love146 is so much more than an organization, agency or company. We are a community of love.
Over the last 6 months or so, in conversations, texts, emails and even letters folks have talked about “my legacy.” And though I deeply appreciate the sentiment behind that, the reality is Love146 is not about one person’s legacy. It is a collective legacy. The legacy of ridiculously compassionate, dedicated and skilled staff. It is a legacy of a ton of audaciously generous and passionate donors who make this work even possible. It is the legacy of my family. Of your families. And most importantly, this is the legacy of the mightiest children, who are the reasons why Love146 even has to exist. It is a legacy that will continue to grow even stronger.
Keep remaining defiant in your hope, steady in your perseverance, relentless in your advocacy, deliberate in your collaboration, intentional in your thoughtfulness and always unfiltered in your joy. Love well. And be about the things that matter.
And so, my fellow shipmates… Sail on!
Much love,
Rob
P.S. I’m remaining on the Board of Love146, and will be joining in at gatherings, like the upcoming Red Gala, so this isn’t goodbye!
